About Hawaii Reporter

Hawaii Reporter Inc. is an award-winning, independent, online news journal launched in February 2002 to cover key business, government, political and educational stories in Hawaii. Local journalists Malia Zimmerman and Jay McWilliams co-founded the publication, which now boasts readers from around the world. The state’s top business and political leaders consider Hawaii Reporter a daily “must read.” Though Hawaii Reporter publishes all points of view, the publication features many local and national columnists and contributors, the vast majority who are free market oriented, and who offer opinions and news not found elsewhere in Hawaii.

In addition to the state’s most current political and business news, Hawaii Reporter’s special reports on the slave factory in American Samoa, elderly abuse, the 2004 mayor’s election, the Ka Loko Dam breach, the Hawaii Superferry, the Honolulu rail and other transportation issues, climate change, Women of World War II, Growing Up in Hawaii, Slice of Life Hawaii, legislation at the Hawaii State Capitol, and corruption and waste in local government, have gained widespread local and national attention. Hawaii Reporter was also the local inspiration for the Hawaii Journalism Shield law passed in 2009 – a law considered one of the best in the country by national journalism advocacy organizations.

Hawaii Reporter has worked as a consultant to ABC 20/20, FOX News and as a researcher for the New York Post. Hawaii Reporter has been featured in numerous media outlets around the world including ABC 20/20, American Journalism Review, Associated Press in Tokyo, Associated Press U.S., Boston.com, Budget and Tax News, BusinessWeek.com, Clear Channel’s number one and two radio talk shows in Denver, Drudge Report, First Amendment Center, Forbes.com, Fox News Network, Freedom Forum, Gun Talk Radio, GunWeek Magazine, Hawaii Bulletin Board - K108 Sunday Mornings, Hawaii Business Magazine, Hawaii Parent magazine, Hawaii Public Radio, The Honolulu Advertiser, Honolulu Magazine, Honolulu Star-Bulletin, HonoluluTraffic.com, Honolulu Weekly, Houston Chronicle, KCCN Radio, KGMB TV 9, KHNL News, KHON TV News 2, KITV News 4, KSSK with Perry & Price, Liberty Magazine, Midweek, MSNBC.com, National Review, News Behind the News, NRA Magazine, NRA Radio, Opinion Journal, Olelo Television, Orange County Register, Pacific Business News, PBS Hawaii, Rick Hamada Morning Show, Rush Limbaugh (web site), Samoa News, School Reform News, Small Business News, United Press International, Wall Street Journal, Washington Times foreign bureau, Women and Guns Magazine and WPAL Radio in Baltimore, Maryland.

Hawaii Reporter Editor Malia Zimmerman also hosts a weekly television show, News Behind the News, which airs weekly on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. on Channel 54. The show has featured exclusive interviews with Hawaii’s political, business and military leaders including former Governor Benjamin Cayetano, former Congressman Ed Case, Hawaii State Attorney General Mark Bennett, Honolulu City Prosecutor Peter Carlisle, US Judge Sam King, Senator Sam Slom and prominent local authors Randall Roth, Bob Sigall and Ken Schoolland.

The Hawaii Reporter government and business records section, renamed “Hawaii Inside Track” in 2009, is managed by co-founder Jay McWilliams. Her research and extensive database, which has more than 2 million records, allows businesses to more easily and immediately research competitors, vendors and clients on the Internet, without having to waste valuable personnel time or money in the city, state and federal courts and offices. The Hawaii Inside Tracking System helps businesses keep a close watch on the other businesses or people they are involved with in their day to day activities by sending the subscriber an email if these businesses or people on their tracking list appear in public record.

Hawaii Reporter, which also has a busy research division, has produced numerous studies and special reports for clients including local law firms, national and local think tanks, local businesses and non-profits
