BY JIM DOOLEY – British national Simon Jasper McCarty nearly beat the rap on child pornography charges filed against him here more than three years ago, but finally pleaded guilty in federal court today.

McCarty was arrested at the airport in Hilo in August 2008 after photographs of naked children spilled from his luggage during a routine TSA check for explosives.

U.S. District Judge J. Michael Seabright’s initially ruled that much of the evidence against McCarty was inadmissible.

That finding was overturned on a government appeal. Seabright last year found some of the photos admissible, along with hundreds of additional images and 200 videos found later by federal agents in McCarty’s computer and a portable electronic storage device.

McCarty, 39, pleaded guilty to one count of producing child pornography, admitting that he molested three pre-pubescent boys and made videos of the molestations.

McCarty will be sentenced by Seabright June 12. He faces between 15 and 30 years in prison and a fine of up to $250,000.

The videotaped molestations occurred outside the United States, according to the government.

Prosecutors filed papers earlier in the case alleging that McCarty molested boys in Nepal and the United Kingdom.

McCarty reportedly helped operate an orphanage in Nepal.

Sixty of the videos found in his possession showed McCarty molesting boys, according to the government.
