It was a dark week for the “New Day” administration of Hawaii Gov. Neil Abercrombie, as a
fourth top level staffer submitted her walking papers Friday, the governor’s office confirmed today.
Deputy Communications Director Laurie Au “will be leaving,” Abercrombie’s press secretary Donalyn Deal Cruz said in an an email.
Au’s departure comes after Chief of Staff Amy Asselbaye, Deputy Chief of Staff Andrew Aoki and Communications Director Josh Levinson submitted their resignations to Abercrombie last week.
Au “indicated that with the resignations of Amy and Andrew, she believes that it is time for a change for her as well,” Dela Cruz said.
Au did not specify the precise date of her departure.
Au is the youngest of the young group of top advisors who have jumped from the Abercrombie ship of state.
Au is in her mid-20’s. She formerly worked as a reporter for the Honolulu Star Bulletin.
Asselabaye and Aoki are in their early 40’s and Levinson is in his 30’s.
The others said they were leaving because they wanted to spend more time with their families.
Levinson and Au, charged with heading the governor’s communications team, did not formally communicate their decisions to resign. Instead they informed only their associates, leaving Dela Cruz to confirm the resignations later.
Dela Cruz said she plans to stay on as press secretary.
Is Abercrombie’s cabinet telling us something and are we not getting the picture? Since the cabinet members are leaving, perhaps the Governor should resign also?
I would not mind having Brian Schatz as Governor. He has a nicer personality, softer spoken, honest and forthright, traits that Abercrombie does not seem to possess.
Let’s move forward and get Abercrombie out.
