Kauai County Council Sets Real Property Tax Rates, Approves Operating Budget

Kauai county logoLĪHU‘E, HAWAI‘I: The Kaua‘i County Council transmitted the Fiscal Year 2014-2015 Operating and Capital Improvements Budget to Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho Jr. yesterday following Council approval of Bill No. 2537, Draft 1 and Bill No. 2538, Draft 1 at Wednesday’s Council Meeting.

The Council also set the Real Property Tax rates for the upcoming fiscal year, which begins July 1, 2014, at the May 28, 2014 Council Meeting.

The Council, in its Budget Message dated May 28, 2014, stated that “the Kaua‘i County Council’s $179 million Operating Budget and $32 million Capital Improvements Projects Budget for the Fiscal Year 2014-2015 (FY 14-15) represents a fundamental shift in the way government intends to do business going forward.”

Furthermore, the Budget Message stated that “Mindful of the County’s budgetary constraints, the Council worked diligently to find ways to serve the health and safety needs of the community without reducing funding vital to building economic diversity.”

Pursuant to the Charter of the County of Kaua‘i, the Mayor has ten days to sign the Operating Budget and Capital Improvements Budget bills into law, return it without signature, or veto.
