BY SEN. SAM SLOM – John Pritchett has a unique talent. As one of Hawaii’s premiere cartoonists, he has a way of making us giggle at some of our most outrageous political proposals and outlandish politicians – and he does so with just one concise image.

An award-winning artist who worked for a number of publications spanning from Hawaii to the U.S. mainland, John has focused his laser like vision on Honolulu’s costly rail system and the pork-friendly politicians who’ve supported it.

Now he’s put these priceless cartoons into a 36-page full-color book entitled Rail: Honolulu’s Big Mistake.

The Small Business Hawaii Entrepreneurial Education Foundation is the publisher for the book, which is being printed locally.

The Foundation is looking for sponsors for the publication, so the book can be quickly printed and distributed. Sponsorships of $500 and up are available.

Should you decide to contribute to this effort, your name will be included in the acknowledgements.

For those who don’t know all of John’s history, his cartoons have appeared weekly in the Honolulu Weekly since 1993 and HawaiiReporter.com since 2010. On Maui, his cartoons are published weekly in Lahaina News.

In 1995, John began publishing a weekly cartoon on economic issues called “Pritchett’s Two Cents” in Pacific Business News. John also provides illustrations and cartoons for Environment Hawaii.

International newspapers, magazines and Web sites also publish his work.

His clients have included Random House, McGraw-Hill, Simon & Schuster, Houghton Miffin and Bedford/St. Martin’s.

Before this book, John produced best selling books on local politics including “Drawn & Quartered” and “The Unbelievable Empire,” and “Jeremy’s World Comics.”

He has been honored with awards from The United Nations Correspondents Association, Hawaii Publishers Association, the Hawaii Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists, Common Cause Hawaii and Small Business Hawaii.

John was a student of world-renowned cartoonist and caricaturist Ranan Lurie in New York in 1988. Before that, he worked in advertising.

Originally a Florida native, John moved to Hawaii in 1974. He’s often seen riding his motorcycle around town.
