2010 Census Demographic Profile for Hawaii Released

BY THE DEPARTMENT OF LAND AND NATURAL RESOURCES – U.S. Census Bureau released the 2010 Demographic profile data for Hawaii, along with other 12 states, on May 19, 2011.  At this time, population by age is only available at 5 year age group.  Population by single age will be available during this summer.  Following is a summary of the data for Hawaii

Age and sex:

In 2010, young age population (0 to 14 years) accounted for 18.5% of the total state population, down from the 20.3% in 2000 while old age population (65 years and above) accounted for 14.3% of the sate total population, up from the 13.3% in 2000.

Statewide median age increased from 36.2 years in 2000 to 38.6 years in 2010.  In 2010, Kauai had the highest median age at 41.3 years, and highest percentage of population 65 years and above at 14.9%, followed by Hawaii County with median age at 40.9 years and 14.5% of its population was 65 years and above.

Due to the increase in population age 15 to 64 between 2000 and 2010, dependency ratio A measure showing the number of dependents (aged 0-14 and age of 65 and over) to the total population (aged 15-64). Also referred to as the “total dependency ratio”.  Calculated by decreased from 50.6 in 2000 to 49.0 in 2010.  All counties experienced decline in dependency ratio.

Sex ratio is more balanced in 2010 at 100.3 males per 100 female, as compared with 101.0 males per 100 female in 2000.

Race

Population with mixed races increased from 21.4% in 2000 to 23.6% in 2010.  As a result, population with one-race-only decreased between the two years.

In terms of population count with one race, Black or African American, Japanese, and Chinese decreased between 200 and 2010.  Native Hawaiians remain level.   Population with other races increased with the White leading the increase at 42,497 persons more in 2010 than in 2000, followed by Filipino added 26,862 persons, Other Pacific Islanders added 19,562 persons, other Asians added 9,677,  Samoans added 2,121, and Vietnamese added 1,912 persons.

In terms of relative size, calculated as the percent of total population, White increased from 24.3% to 24.7%; Filipino increased from 14.1% to 14.5%; Vietnamese increased from 0.6% to 0.7%; other Asians increased from 3.6% to 3.9%; other Pacific Islanders increased from 1.3% to 2.5% while the percent of Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Native Hawaiian decreased during the last 10 years.

Hispanic or Latino population increased more than double from 87,699 in 2000 to 120,842 in 2010, a 37.8% increase.

Household Type

Group quarter population grew 19.8% between 2000 and 2010 while household population grew by 12.0%, as a result, the percent of household population dropped from 97.0% of the total population to 96.8% in 2010.

Non-family household increased by 21.7% between 2000 and 2010 while family households increased 9.3% during the same time.  Husband-wife family increased 6.5%, while those with children under 18 years decreased 5.3% from 96,758 in 2000 to 91,610 in 2010.

Households with female householder, no husband present increased 14.7% between 2000 and 2010, of those households with own children under 18 years increased only 0.8%.

In 2010, there were 106,175 people living alone, representing 20.4% increase from 2000.  Of these, 51.5% were females and 48.5% were male.  36,947 of the single-person households were people 65 years and above, accounted for 34.8% of the people living alone.

Average household size decreased to 2.89 persons in 2010 from 2.92 persons in 2000.  Average family size remained the same at 3.42 persons per family between the two years.

Housing Characteristics

Total Hawaii housing units in 2010 was 519,508, an increase of 12.8% from 2000.  Of these, 87.6% were occupied, the same as in 2000.

In 2010, there were 30,079 housing units for seasonal, recreational, or occasional use, that an increase from 25,584 units in 2000.

Rental vacancy rate in 2010 was 7.8%, down from the 8.2% in 2000.

Of the occupied housing units in 2010, homeownership was 57.7%, up from 56.5% in 2000.
