Some key Hawaii state lawmakers are pushing for legislation to allow “red light” cameras to be posted at stoplights throughout the state, so those who run red lights (estimated to be the cause of less than 4 percent of accidents) will be captured on film and sent a very expensive ticket.
The proposed program is similar to the failed “van cam” program, which lawmakers introduced and passed in 1998, then implemented and subsequently cancelled in 2002, because the public was in such an uproar over the costly citations being issued at record pace. Subsequently, the courts found the system unconstitutional.
