HONOLULU – Lt. Governor James R. “Duke” Aiona, Jr. today announced the State has released an additional $17,000,000 for the ongoing renovation and repair of Aloha Stadium.

This latest allotment of construction funds includes $14,500,000 for the replacement of the metal roof deck and lighting transformers above sections AA to EE and A to K.  The metal roof deck is being incrementally replaced by sections over an extended period of time to work around Aloha Stadium’s busy seasons.

In addition, $2,500,000 will be used to replace the field playing surface.  The underlying asphalt layer will be re-graded and a new synthetic field turf covering along with drainage improvements.

Subject to contracts being awarded, the projects are currently scheduled to start construction in March 2011 and be completed by August 2011, in time for the start of the 2011 University of Hawai‘i and high school football season.

“The investment in the upgrade of Aloha Stadium is part of our Administration’s continuing efforts to modernize public facilities and infrastructure, while also helping to stimulate the economy and create jobs,” said Lt. Governor Aiona.  “These projects in particular are critical to ensuring the safety of stadium users and staff.”

Opened in 1975, Aloha Stadium has a seating capacity of nearly 50,000. It is home to the University of Hawai‘i Warriors football team and hosts many other events, including the NFL Pro Bowl, an NCAA sanctioned bowl game, high school athletics, soccer matches, concerts, car shows and the swap meet.
