WASHINGTON (Talon News) — The Rewards for Justice Program, which is run out of the U.S. State Department, has begun an advertising campaign in Pakistan to publicize the financial rewards offered for information leading to the apprehension of terrorists believed to be in the region.
The advertisements will run in Pakistani newspapers and air on Pakistani radio and television stations in both the Urdu and Pashto languages.
The initial print advertisement published in a leading Pakistani daily publication featured photos and reward amounts for terrorists who may be in the region, such as Usama Bin Laden, Midhat Mursi al-Sayid ‘Umar, and Mullah Omar. The initial campaign will last for one month.
Secretary of State Colin Powell has authorized rewards up to $25 million for information leading to the arrest or conviction of Usama Bin Laden or Ayman Al-Zawahiri. Rewards also may be paid for information leading to the arrest or conviction of terrorists attempting, committing, conspiring to commit, or aiding and abetting in the commission of terrorist acts against U.S. persons and property worldwide.
Since its inception in 1984 as part of the Act to Combat International Terrorism, the Rewards for Justice Program has paid more than $57 million to 43 people who have provided credible information that has resulted in the capture or death of terrorists or prevented acts of international terrorism.
The program has proven to be one of the U.S. Government’s most valuable tools in the fight against international terrorism. It is administered by the U.S. State Department’s Bureau of Diplomatic Security.
People with information to report regarding the individuals named in the advertisement are urged to contact the U.S. Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan.
