REPORT FROM KAUAI COUNTY – In light of the tragic events that occurred in Boston today, Mayor Bernard P. Carvalho, Jr., the Kaua’i County Council, the Kaua’i Civil Defense Agency, and the Kaua’i Police Department join together to offer their condolences to those affected and restore a sense of security within our local community.

“Our officers are on heightened alert and our Criminal Intelligence Unit has been in contact with our counterparts at the local, state and federal levels,” stated Kaua’i Police Chief Darryl Perry. “At this time there is nothing to indicate a local threat here in Hawai’i, but we will continue to work with our partnering law enforcement agencies to monitor the situation and will make adjustments as needed. Our hearts go out to all those who have been affected by today’s senseless act.”

Mayor Carvalho and the County Council have also been briefed by local and state Civil Defense agencies throughout the day.

“Our hearts and prayers go out to the families and loved ones of those who were killed today, and to the many victims who suffered injuries,” stated Mayor Carvalho. “It is our understanding that there were a number of Hawai’i residents who participated in today’s Boston Marathon, and to the best of our knowledge, all of them remain safe. But today we are all reminded that our safety is never guaranteed, and I thank our first responders for continuing to be diligent and working with their counterparts to keep our community safe.”

Council Chair Jay Furfaro added, “We are greatly saddened by today’s tragic events in Boston and grieve with the rest of the nation for those who lost their life or were seriously injured due to this unimaginable violence. The events today are a reminder that we must always continue to remain focused on our core mission of public safety for our residents and our county.”

The Kaua’i Civil Defense Agency have been working closely with state and national representatives today.

“We are in continuing communication with our state Civil Defense Agency, and while we are all on a heightened alert, there is no cause for an immediate safety concern here locally,” confirmed Civil Defense Manager Ted Daligdig. “We will remain vigilant and are ready to respond as necessary.”

Those who are concerned about the welfare of someone who may have been impacted by the events in Boston today can call (617) 635-4500 for assistance. Callers should be prepared to call multiple times before getting through to the national hotline.
