An intense lightning storm was likely the cause of power outages for 60,000 residents from Windward Oahu, Waimanalo and Hawaii Kai, to Kahala and Kaimuki this afternoon and evening.

Heavy rains hit Honolulu for several hours, leaving the area under a flash flood warning until just after 9 p.m. on Monday.

Punahou School student, Zach Grief, photographed this water spout off of Honolulu.

Another photo from Kailua, Oahu, showed the lightning storm over Kailua Bay.

  1. I guess that's the one downside to living in a tropical paradise. When a heavy storm hits, all you can really do is batten down the hatches, sit tight, and hope the city drainage can handle all that water.
