The Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism released the following highlights about Hawaii’s energy trends:

1.        Crude oil price at the New York Mercantile Exchange averaged $102.98 per barrel in March 2011 which was 26.7% higher compared to the same month last year.  Crude oil price increased $13.24 per barrel or 14.75% from February 2011.

2.        In January,  2011 import of foreign crude oil totaled 3.9 million barrels or down 21.8% compared to the same month a year ago.  Jet fuel kerosene and propane were also imported from foreign sources in January 2011.  Three hundred fifteen thousand barrels of jet fuel kerosene and 52,000 barrels of propane were imported in January 2011, which was down 13.3% and 10.3% for the same period a year ago, respectively.
3.        In March 2011, the national average price for regular gasoline was $3.540 per gallon, which represented a 27.3% increase from the same month a year ago.  Hawaii’s March 2011 price for regular gasoline averaged $4.047, which was about $0.507 or 14.3% higher than the national average for the same month.  Hawaii’s March 2011 price for regular gasoline increased $0.301 or 8.0% from February 2011.  Among the prices of regular gasoline for Honolulu, Wailuku, and Hilo, as reported by the American Automobile Association, Wailuku had the highest price at $4.269 which was an increase of $0.25 or 6.3% from the previous month (February 2011).  The price of regular gasoline for Honolulu was $3.959 which was an increase of $0.287 or 8.9% from February 2011.  Hilo’s price of regular gasoline was $4.085 which represented an increase of $0.323 or 8.6% from February 2011.

4.        In March 2011, the national average price for diesel was $3.913 per gallon, which was an increase of 33.9% from the same month a year ago.  In Hawaii, the average price for diesel in March 2011 was $4.455 which was $0.542 or 13.9% higher than the national average.  In March 2011, Wailuku had the highest average price of diesel, at $4.640, among Hawaii’s market, which represented an increase of $0.294 or 6.8% from the previous month.  Honolulu’s price for diesel was $4.313 which was an increase of $0.287 or 7.1% from the previous month.  The diesel price for Hilo was $4.546 which was an increase of $0.188 or 4.3% from February 2011.

5.        Hawaii’s statewide demand for gasoline, as measured by gasoline tax base, increased 11.4% in January 2011 from the same month a year ago.  Hawaii’s statewide demand for gasoline in January 2011 also showed an increase of 3.4 million gallons or 9.8% from the previous month December 2010.

6.        Hawaii’s January 2011 demand for diesel, highway use, as measured by the diesel oil tax base, was 4.0 million gallons or an increase of 80.6% compared to the same period a year ago.  Hawaii’s January 2011 demand for diesel, non-highway use, totaled 22.2 million gallons or an increase of 86.9% from the same period last year.  This increase also represents 13.5 million gallons or 155.3% from the previous month December 2010.

7.        As of March 2011, there were 934,488 registered taxable gasoline passenger vehicles in the state, 2.0% increase from the same period last year (March 2010).  There were 9,714 registered passenger hybrid vehicles, accounted for 1.0% of the total 952,851 registered passenger vehicles in March 2011, and represented an increase of86 vehicles or 0.9% from February 2011.  There were 21,466 registered taxable diesel freight vehicles, 0.5% decrease from the same period last year.  The number of hybrid freight vehicles totaled 61 in March 2011.  There were 267 registered taxable electric passenger vehicles or a 54.3% increase from March 2010.

8.        Kauai Island Utility Cooperative’s (KIUC) net generation from January to February 2011 totaled 68.9 GWh or a 2.2% increase from the same period last year.  Electricity generated by steam increased 552.9% compared to the same period a year ago.  Electricity generated by diesel decreased 2.4%, while electricity generated by hydro was up 19.7% when compared to the same period last year.  In February 2011, KIUC purchased 2.8 GWh from independent power producers, up 50.9% when compared to the same month in 2010.  The year-to-date electricity purchased by KIUC represented 7.5% of the electricity sent to the system.

9.        In February 2011, KIUC consumed 55,056 barrels of diesel oil, an increase of 2.3% from February 2010.  The average cost per barrel of diesel oil consumed by KIUC in February 2011 was $113.78 or up 19.4% from the average price in February 2010.  Overall, year-to-date consumption of diesel oil by KIUC totaled 114,299 barrels, reflecting an increase of 2.7% from the same period last year.  The year–to-date average cost per barrel of diesel oil was $110.92 or an increase of 18.1% from the same period last year.  Overall, the year-to-date total cost of diesel oil consumed totaled $12.7 million or a 21.3% increase from the same period last year.  Also, the year-to-date cost of diesel oil per KWh generated was $0.199 or a 24.7% increase from last year.

10.        KIUC’s total electricity sales in February 2011 totaled 33.7 GWh or an increase of 3.8% from 2010.  Electricity sales to the residential sector totaled 12.6 GWh or up 2.3% and sales to the commercial sector totaled 20.9 GWh or up 4.7% compared to February 2010.  Year-to-date (January to February 2011), KIUC’s total electricity sales were 72.5 GWh or an increase of 3.7% from the same period last year.  However, KIUC’s total electricity sales decreased 13.2% from January 2011.

11.        KIUC’s total net revenue in February 2011 totaled $13.3 million dollars reflecting an increase of 14.4% from February 2010.  The 2011 year-to-date net revenues for KIUC totaled $28.1 million dollars or an increase of 14.2% from the same period in 2010. January 2011.  The 2010 year-to-date net revenue for the residential sector total $11.1 million dollars or up 17.3%, and for the commercial sector, net revenue totaled $16.7 million dollars or up 12.2% from the same period in 2010.

12.        For February 2011, KIUC’s average residential retail price was 40.82 cents per kWh, an increase of 12.9% from February 2010 and a 3.1 % increase from January 2011.  The average commercial retail price was 38.37 cents per kWh or an increase of 8.7% from February 2010 and a 3.2% from January 2011.

13.        The energy cost adjustment factor for electricity effective March 1, 2011 for each of the island was as follows:  Kauai (0.05139 $/kWh); Oahu (0.07638 $/kWh); Maui (0.03896 $/kWh); Lanai (0.06051 $/kWh); Molokai (0.02723 $/kWh); and Hawaii (0.06803 $/kWh).
