You’ve got the property, now what?
You’ve got the property, but how many of us forget all the items we need to take care of after? About 5 days prior to your closing, and sometimes sooner, this list will help you prepare for your important day—MOVING!!!
The most important people to contact after you purchase your home are:
- the insurance company
- the resident manager
- a locksmith
I’ve put together a checklist of everything to remember once you’ve purchased your home:
- Re-key all doors/gates to property (Locksmith: Smart Alec 808.638.9526)
- Notify resident/property/association manager at least 1 week prior to moving (ask your Realtor for information)
- Obtain necessary car identification decals/security gate codes/pass codes from the resident manager
- Fill out a change of address form for mail (at your local post office, or via USPS Mover’s Guide)
- File Home Exemption Forms (due by 9/30 for next fiscal year) (City and County of Honolulu Property Assessment Office, Phone: 808-527-5539)
- Telephone service (Hawaiian Telcom Phone: 808-643-3456—please call within 5 days of moving)
- Electricity (Hawaiian Electric Co. Phone: 808-548-7311)
- The Gas Company (Phone: 808-535-5933 ext. 2)
- Board of Water Supply (Phone: 808-748-5030)
- Hawaii American Water Co. (Phone: 866-430-0826) (This is the sewer company for property located in the Hawaii Kai area only)
- The Honolulu Star-Advertiser (Phone: 808-538-6397)
- Oceanic Cable (Phone: 808-643-2337)
- Insurance company for homeowner’s insurance (Contact Breanne Shimabukuro, Business Insurance, 808.853.3412, or Young Park, State Farm, 808.524.9997)
- Bank/credit card accounts
- Motor Vehicle Office
- Children’s schools
- Doctor, dentist, etc.
- Employer, family, and friends
- Magazine subscriptions
- Contact Property Manager to manage property if for investment
- Contact accountant for General Excise Tax instructions
- Transfer any warranties (i.e. termite, home, etc.)
