By Hector DeJean – National award-winning local humor columnist and former crime and investigative reporter Charley Memminger will be one of the featured speakers at the Hawaii Book & Music Festival, the state’s premier celebration of writing and music.

The festival will take place on May 18 and 19 on the grounds of the Frank F. Fasi Civic Center, near Honolulu Hale.

Memminger will be talking about his new novel, “Aloha, Lady Blue,” a tropical thriller set in Hawaii published by St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur Books, on Sunday, May 19 at 1 p.m. at the Author’s Pavilion Makai., Memminger will be introducing Yunte Huang, author of “Charlie Chan: The Untold Story of the Honorable Detective and His Rendezvous with American History” at noon Saturday, May 18, at the Mission Memorial Auditorium.  Memminger also will be signing copies of “Aloha, Lady Blue.”

The Hawaii Book & Music Festival is state’s largest event of its kind in Hawaii. Honorary festival chair Mayor Kirk Caldwell said “The festival reflects the diversity of our island culture … the roster of offerings, activities and performances has broadened over the years. Where else can you enjoy opera mezzo-soprano Laurie Gale Rubin, the PBS KIDS characters, and a song-writing completion together with Hawaii’s best authors, poets and playwrights?”

Memminger, well known for his 30 years as a writer at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin, as well as a staff writer on “Baywatch Hawaii,” finished his first novel, “Aloha, Lady Blue,” after leaving the newspaper. He was picked up as a client by literary agent Richard Pine, head of “Inkwell Management” and then signed a two-book deal with St. Martin’s Press/Minotaur Books.

Since its release this year, “Aloha, Lady Blue” has picked up a number great national reviews, including a rare Red Star review from Publisher’s Weekly, which noted: Deft storytelling, intrigue galore, and island splendor distinguish humor columnist Memminger’s strong first novel … Readers will want to see a lot more of this engaging hero in the John D. MacDonald tradition.”

“Aloha, Lady Blue” also received rave reviews from Good Reads, Kirkus Reviews, Huffington Post, Houston Chronicle, Charlotte (North Carolina) Observer, Richmond Times Dispatch, Booklist and  Library Journal Review, the American Library Association’s journal for the past 100 years.

“Aloha, Lady Blue” is on sale in bookstores across the country, as well as online at Amazon.com, Barnes & Noble.com and many other literary sites. The audio and eBook versions also are available.
