Fort Shafter – The Army announced today its force structure and stationing decisions associated with the active component (AC) end-strength reduction of 80,000 Soldiers to 490,000 – a 14 percent reduction across the AC force – by 2017.

“U.S. Army Pacific is always looking at our force and how it balances against requirements to accomplish our mission in the theater and support of Pacific Command”, said Colonel Mike Donnelly, Chief of Public Affairs, U.S. Army Pacific. “In the end, it’s not about how much is gained or lost but having the right mix and capability to successfully perform our mission,” added Donnelly.

In the Pacific, the Army gains approximately 700 positions in various units throughout Hawaii and Alaska in support of the National Defense Strategy for Rebalancing to the Pacific.  A reorganization of support units in Alaska will result in a loss of approximately 900 military police and engineer positions.  Despite the losses, the Army end-strength in Alaska will continue to remain higher compared to pre-9/11 levels.

Army Pacific leaders are meeting with community leaders and key stakeholders to inform them of these decisions and will mitigate – as much as possible – the impacts on Soldiers, Families, and local communities.

With this force structure, the Army retains its adaptability and flexibility to provide Regionally Aligned and Mission-Tailored Forces in support of national defense requirements and security and stability in the Pacific.

These reductions do not reflect sequestration that will cause additional reductions across all components of the Army if left unmitigated.

  1. I think the army is very important. Violence is increasing all over the world…I think we should be prepared for anything

  2. I am not for violence, but I do believe that we should always be prepared for the worst….it's just the world we're living in

  3. Reading about this makes me feel very nervous! I hope there is no real reason why we are making the military stronger.
