BY REP. GENE WARD – Aloha Friends and Neighbors, And the beat goes on…. with slower traffic and a few tips to hopefully make your weekend a little less stressful.

And many thanks to you who have provided feedback, suggestions, and ideas on ways to improve traffic in the district. All have been forwarded to the Department of Transportation and my office will provide you updates as they are answered.

Now regarding lane closures and slowdowns:  The H1 Freeway “Tattooing” aka Dowel Bar Retrofitting on the H-1 Freeway from Kaimuki to Kahala continues through the weekend and during weeknights.

The left lane of the freeway in the eastbound direction will be closed from the King Street off-ramp to the Waialae Avenue on-ramp on:

–          Saturday, 8/27, 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

–          Sunday, 8/28, 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 a.m. Monday, 8/29

–          Monday-Wednesday nights (8/29-8/31), 8:00 p.m. – 5:00 a.m.

Kalanianaole Highway: Work continues on the widening project between Keahole Street and Hawaii Kai Drive on Kalanianaole Highway.  Multiple lane closures in both directions are expected on:

–          Monday-Friday days (8/29-9/2), 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Tree trimming and sewer work will continue from Ainakoa Avenue to Puuikena Drive closing the eastbound right lane of Kalanianaole Highway on:

–          Monday-Friday days (8/29-9/2), 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Many of you wondered why all this is being done all at once and during the peak back-to-school daylight hours rather than staggered and/or at night.  They are not saying it, but I think the APEC meetings of 21 heads of state converging on Honolulu the first two weeks of November could have a lot to do with the rush.

So again, my heartfelt thanks for your continued patience as the Department of Transportation works hard to maintain our aging highways and roads.  If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at (808) 586-6420 or via e-mail at repward@capitol.hawaii.gov.  You can also contact the Department of Transportation’s Public Affairs Office at (808) 587-2160 if you wish.
