BY CONGRESSWOMAN TULSI GABBARD –Today, President Barack Obama informed the Hawai‘i congressional delegation that Senator Daniel K. Inouye will be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom.
Senator Daniel K. Inouye has long been recognized as one of the most important figures in the history of our beloved State of Hawai‘i. With President Obama’s decision to present him with the Medal of Freedom, our nation’s highest civilian honor, Senator Inouye joins a small group of outstanding Americans who have been recognized for their significant contributions to the United States.
Senator Inouye’s compassion and humility, along with an incredible love of country, have been an inspiration to me and countless others around the world. It is only fitting that we honor the life and legacy of Senator Inouye, one of our most distinguished soldiers from our greatest generation. Through this award, and the countless people he has touched in his decades of service, Dan Inouye’s life and legacy will live on for generations to come.
In his words, the future of Hawai‘i —and our nation—is determined by ‘what is in our hearts.’ It is more important than ever that we strive to live up to his example of true servant leadership.
Oprah Winfrey is also getting the award

he had his 15 minutes of fame during the Iran-contra affair hearings.but other than that, what is his legacy in congress? he expanded cronyism in Hawaii.he catered to special interests.this senator Inouye and the other guy were powerful mandarins.the ultimate inside the beltway, establishment professional politicians.did he contribute legislatively to promote economic growth? he promoted and helped grow the military/industrial complex with generous apprpriations of taxpayer money.just to maintain his powerbase in the senate and democratic party in Hawaii.he contributed to a steady decline of free market capitalism,of personal liberties.he enriched and rewarded certain groups of voters and political donors.he probably enriched himself, his family and close friends. His defenders will say:" so what? he brought home the bacon.they all do it!" but it doesn't make it right.
On this one I agree with you shaft.
Congratulations! He deserved this! Thank you for your work!
A great honor is being presented to him! I hope he appreciates it!
