Hawaii’s Energy Trend Report – October 5, 2011

The September 2011 Monthly Energy Trend Report from Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism is just released.

Following are highlights:

1.        Crude oil price at the New York Mercantile Exchange averaged $85.61 per barrel in September 2011 which was 13.3% higher compared to the same month last year.  Crude oil price was down $0.73 per barrel or 0.9% from August 2011.  Year-to-date through September, crude oil price increased 23.0% over the same period last year.

2.        Hawaii’s refineries imported 3.3 million barrels of foreign crude oil in July 2011, up 442 thousand barrels or 15.2% from July last year.  Foreign crude oil imports decreased 1.8 million barrels or 35.1% from June 2011.  Year-to-date through July crude oil imports from foreign sources decreased 0.1% from the same period last year.  Propane imports totaled 55 thousand barrels in July 2011, up 22.2% compared to July 2010.

3.        Jet fuel foreign imports were up 75.9% over July 2010.  Year-to-date foreign imports of jet fuel kero totaled 2.4 million barrels or a decrease of 8.4% over the same period last year.

4.        In September 2011, the national average price for regular gasoline was $3.585 per gallon, which represented a 32.6% increase from the same month a year ago and a decrease of $0.034 or 0.9% from the previous month August 2011.  Hawaii’s September 2011 price for regular gasoline averaged $4.190, which was about $0.605 or 16.9% higher than the national average for the same month.  Hawaii’s September 2011 price for regular gasoline increased $0.74 or 1.81% from August 2011.  Among the prices of regular gasoline for Honolulu, Wailuku, and Hilo, as reported by the American Automobile Association, Wailuku had the highest average price at $4.391 which increased $0.014 or 0.3% from the previous month (August 2011).  The average price of regular gasoline for Honolulu was $4.079 which increased by $0.069 or 1.7% from August 2011.  Hilo’s average price of regular gasoline was $4.280 and represented an increase of $0.129 or 3.1% from August 2011.

5.        The September 2011 national average price for diesel was $3.887 per gallon which was an increase of 31.2% from the same month a year ago and a decrease of $0.020 or 0.5% from August 2011.  In Hawaii, the average price for diesel in September 2011 was $4.752 which was $0.864 or 22.2% higher than the national average.  Hawaii’s September 2011 average price for diesel increased $0.039 or 0.8% from the previous month.  In September 2011, Hilo had the highest average price of diesel, at $4.941, among Hawaii’s market, which represented an increase of $0.126 or 2.6% from the previous month.  The average diesel price for Wailuku was $4.924, which was an increase of $0.076 or 1.6% from August 2011.  Honolulu’s average price for diesel was $4.633 which was an increase of $0.014 or 0.3% from the previous month.

6.        Hawaii’s statewide demand for gasoline, as measured by the gasoline tax base, decreased 2.0% in July 2011 from the same month a year ago.  A total of 38.2 million gallons of gasoline was distributed in July 2011, of which 64.2% was distributed to the City and County of Honolulu, 13.8% to Maui County, 16.9% to Hawaii County; and 6.1% to Kauai County.  Year-to-date, the Department of Taxation data showed that fuel distributors shipped a total 277.9 million gallons of gasoline, representing an increase of 20.4% from the same period last year.

7.        Hawaii’s July 2011 demand for diesel, highway use, as measured by the diesel oil tax base, was 3.5 million gallons, representing a decrease of 13.9% compared to the same period a year ago.  Year-to-date, Hawaii’s demand for diesel, highway use, totaled 29.0 million gallons or a 2.9% decrease from the same period a year ago.

8.        In July 2011, data from the Department of Taxation showed aviation fuel increased 1.1 million barrels or 6.2% from the same month a year ago statewide.  The 19.6 million gallons of aviation fuel distributed in July 2011 were shipped to the various counties as follows:  City and County of Honolulu, 48.9%; Maui County, 28.9%; Hawaii County, 11.8%; and Kauai County, 10.4%.  Year-to-date, the amount of aviation fuel distributed totaled 133.0 million gallons or a 32.9% increase compared to the same period a year ago.

9.        As of September 2011, there were 960,283 registered taxable gasoline passenger vehicles in the state, 5.4% increase from the same period last year (September 2010).  There were 10,299 registered passenger hybrid vehicles, accounted for 1.1% of the total 979,748 registered passenger vehicles in September 2011, and represented an increase of 117 vehicles or 1.2% from August 2011.  There were 21,666 registered taxable diesel freight vehicles, 0.8% increase from the same period last year.  The number of hybrid freight vehicles totaled 63 in September 2011.  There were 527 registered taxable electric passenger vehicles or an increase of 225.3% from September 2010.  The number of registered taxable electric passenger vehicles increased by 101 or 23.7% from August 2011.

10.        Net electricity generation was down 2.1% for Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC) in August 2011 when compared to August 2010.  KIUC generated 840 MWh from hydro, a 0.6% increase from August 2010.  The year-to-date (January through August) KIUC’s total net generation was down 1.3 GWh or 0.4% in comparison to the same period last year.

11.        In August 2011, KIUC purchased 3.0 GWh from independent plants (IPPs), up 19.0% from the same month a year ago.  In comparison to the previous month, July 2011, KIUC’s electricity purchase from IPPs decreased by 168.6 MWh or 5.3%.  Year-to-date, KIUC purchased 25.1 GWh, an increase of 24.9% in comparison to the same period last year.  The ratio of electricity purchased from IPPs to total electricity generated by KIUC was 1:11.4, that is for every KWh KIUC purchased, KIUC generated 11.4 KWh.

12.        KIUC’s average cost per barrel of diesel oil consumed for electricity generation in August 2011 was $124.35, up 39.5% from the average cost a year ago.  The total diesel oil consumption in August 2011 was 61,876 barrels, down 3.3% when compared to the consumption in August 2010.  The cost of diesel oil per kWh of electricity generated in August 2011 was $0.207, up 31.9% compared to the same month a year ago.  In comparison to the previous month (July 2011), the total diesel oil consumed in August decreased 1,079 barrels or 1.7%.  Year-to-date (January through August 2011), volume of diesel oil consumption for electricity generation was up by 0.4%, while the total cost of diesel oil consumed was up 32.0% and the average cost of barrel consumed was also up 31.4% compared to the same period a year ago.  The year-to-date average cost of diesel oil per kWh generated was $0.222, an increase of 35.1% from the same period a year ago.

13.        In August 2011, electricity sales by KIUC totaled 37.5 GWh, down 1.8% from August 2010.  Residential electricity sales increased 0.1% from August 2010 and increased 1.7% from July 2011.  Sales to the commercial sector decreased 2.9% from August 2010 and was up 0.7% from July 2011.  Year-to-date electricity sales were 292.4 GWh, an increase of 1.4% from the same period in 2010.  Year-to-date electricity sales to the residential and commercial sectors increased 1.9% and 1.2%, respectively.

14.        The total net revenues earned by KIUC in August 2011 totaled $15.7 million reflecting an increase of 18.9% from August 2010.  For August 2011, residential and commercial revenues increased by 19.6% and 18.6%, respectively, from August 2010.  Total net revenues decreased about $329,600 or 2.1% from July 2011.  The 2011 year-to-date net revenues was $121.5 million or an increase of 19.4% from the same period in 2010.  The 2011 year-to-date net revenue for the residential sector total $46.6 million  or up 21.0%, and for the commercial sector, net revenue totaled $73.9 million  or up 18.5% from the same period in 2010.

15.        For August 2011, the average Kauai residential retail price for electricity was 43.15 cents per kWh, an increase of 19.5% from August 2010 and a 3.0% decrease from July 2011.  The average commercial retail price was 40.92 cents per kWh or an increase of 22.1% from August 2010 and a decrease of 3.2% from July 2011.  Overall, the 2011 year-to-date electric retail prices for all sectors on Kauai was 41.56 cents or 17.7% higher compared to the same period last year.  Year-to-date 2011 average residential retail prices increased to 42.94 cents per kWh, representing an 18.8% increase from the same period in 2010.

16.        The energy cost adjustment factor for electricity effective September 1, 2011 for each of the island was as follows:  Kauai (0.06878 $/kWh); Oahu (0.11620 $/kWh); Maui (0.06502 $/kWh); Lanai (0.09469 $/kWh); Molokai (0.07527 $/kWh); and Hawaii (0.10524 $/kWh).
