Governor AbercrombieGovernor Neil Abercrombie on Wednesday will unveil a new plan to create jobs and build new housing in the Kakaakao area of Honolulu.

The governor will testify at a special meeting of the Hawaii Community Development Authority.

His office was providing no details of the plan, but tomorrow’s HCDA agenda says the meeting concerns a proposed “mixed-use transit-oriented development” on the former site of Pohukaina School at 690 Pohukaina Street.

The planned route of the Honolulu rapid transit line runs a block mauka of Pohukaina Street along Halekauwila Street.

The 2.17 acre Pohukaina property site is owned by the state Department of Land and Natural Resources.

Three HCDA agenda items for tomorrow’s special HCDA meeting all concern proposals for acquisition and development of the property.

In a brief HCDA Advisory today, Abercrombie’s office said he will testify at the HCDA meeting “in support of building workforce housing through a public-private partnership that will create an estimated 1,500 jobs.”

After the meeting, Abercrombie and HCDA Executive Director Anthony Ching “will formally announce a new Kaka’ako development project,” the governor’s office said.
