HONOLULU — Pacific Corporate Solutions (PCS), in partnership with Sims Recycling Solutions, is offering free electronics recycling and pickup service for all Oahu businesses, nonprofit organizations, educational institutions and government entities until the end of the year.

“Electronic waste is the fastest-growing waste stream in the world today with more than 2 million tons ending up in landfills,” said Lance Furuyama, PCS vice president of operations. “Pacific Corporate Solutions is committed to protecting our precious environment by cutting the amount of electronic waste sent to our landfills.”

Furuyama said PCS sends all recycled equipment to its Halawa warehouse for sorting and on-site destruction of hard drives. All electronic waste is then packed and shipped to Sims Recycling Solutions in California, avoiding any addition to Hawaii’s landfills.

PCS will pick up desktop and laptop computers, CPUs, servers, CRT and LCD monitors, keyboards, mice, scanners, routers, DVD players, VCRs, telephones, PDAs, copiers/printers, fax machines, MP3 players, speakers, stereo equipment, digital and video cameras, calculators, electronic boards and cords/cables.

Furuyama said he hopes the free, limited-time offer will encourage more businesses, especially in downtown Honolulu, to take advantage of the easy, convenient service. “This is a great time for companies to get rid of their old electronic equipment and save money,” he said. “In 2012, the average weight of materials from a business pickup was 844 pounds. At the standard billing rate of 50 cents a pound, that would total $422.”

In 2012, PCS recycled about 725 tons – 1.45 million pounds – of electronics. Some of the most popular items recycled were computers, monitors and printers.

Furuyama added that although electronic waste constitutes only about 2 percent of the typical municipal solid waste stream, it nonetheless accounts for about 70 percent of the toxic waste found in landfills, including cadmium, lead and mercury, which can contaminate soil and groundwater. “By cutting the amount of toxic electronic waste going into our landfills, we can make a huge positive impact on our environment,” Furuyama said.

Companies and organizations can schedule a pickup at www.ewastehawaii.com or by calling 488-8870.

  1. We cordially ask that you refrain from using "PCS" to refer to Pacific Corporate Solutions. "PCS" is a registered trademark for Pacific Commercial Services, LLC. We are a locally owned company that provides turnkey environmental services that include handling of e-waste.

  2. I believe that each and everyone of us should recycle whatever we can! Things on Earth are not going well and we, the citizens of Earth have the responsibility to take care of our planet. I, for example, recycle everything that is not needed and I managed to make the office where I work recycle too! Last week we recycled our old IT components and computers at https://corporatecomputerrecycling.co.uk/ I suggest them to everybody who wants to do the same thing
