BY CHIMAINE POUTEAU – HONOLULU, HAWAII – As the New Year commences, The Hawaii Affiliate of Susan G. Komen is calling for volunteers to help in their mission to find a cure for breast cancer. “Volunteers are at the heart of our organization and we appreciate their motivation and enthusiastic support,” said Shelia Callum, executive director of Susan G. Komen, Hawaii Affiliate.

Without volunteers, many worthwhile programs and projects would not take place. During our volunteer drive the Hawaii Affiliate is recruiting a knowledgeable, committed staff of volunteers with varied skills for our education, fundraising and race committees. We are looking for seasoned volunteers who have had nonprofit experience, as well as new volunteers with fresh ideas.

The Hawaii Affiliate is hosting a volunteer training day on Saturday, January 28, from 9:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at Shriners Children’s Hospital Conference Room. Training will include an orientation for volunteers to create better Komen Affiliate ambassadors to the community, familiarize volunteers with the history of Komen, review 2012 schedule of events and reinforce Komen’s role in the fight against breast cancer.

Those interested in attending the training should contact: Lori Garcia, Mission Coordinator at the Susan G. Komen, Hawaii Affiliate by calling (808) 754-6659 or email komen@komenhawaii.org.

Volunteers are needed to assist with this year’s Pink Tie Ball on March 9, the Kona Marathon for the Cure set for June 23 and the 2012 Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure on Sunday, October 21. Volunteers will also be needed for other smaller events taking place in 2012 throughout the islands of Hawaii.
