Highlights for September 2013’s Monthly Energy Trends

  •      Crude Oil Costs:

In September 2013, crude oil price increased both from the same month last year and from the previous month.  Crude oil price at the New York Mercantile Exchange averaged $106.24 per barrel in September 2013 which was $11.68 per barrel or 12.3% higher compared to the same month last year.  Crude oil price was down $0.21 per barrel or 0.2% from August 2013.

  •      Refinery Processing:

According to the most recent data available, Hawaii’s refineries imported 1.4 million barrels of foreign crude oil in July 2013, down 2.224 million barrels or 61.4% from the same month of 2012.  In July 2013, foreign crude oil imports decreased  0.147 million barrels or 9.5% from June 2013.

  •      Gasoline Pricing:

Compared with the same month last year, in September 2013, Hawaii’s price for regular gasoline decreased 2%, although the price of crude oil increased 12.3%.  In September 2013, the national average price for regular gasoline was $3.509 per gallon, down $0.319 per gallon or 8.3% from the same month last year; and down $0.053 per gallon or 1.5% from August 2013.

In September 2013, Hawaii’s price for regular gasoline averaged $4.307 per gallon, which was $0.799 per gallon or 22.8% higher than the national average for the same month.

Hawaii’s September 2013 price for regular gasoline increased $0.086 per gallon or 2.0% from the same month last year, and decreased $0.038 per gallon or 0.9% from August 2013.  In September 2013, the average regular gasoline prices within the State were as follows: Kauai, $4.591; Oahu, $4.205; Wailuku, $4.513; and Hilo, $4.290.

  •      Diesel Fuel Pricing:

The September 2013 the national average price for diesel was $3.933 per gallon which was a decrease of 4.3% from the same month a year ago and an increase of 1.3 percent from August 2013.

In Hawaii, the average price for diesel in September 2013 was $4.904 per gallon which was $0.97 per gallon or 24.7% higher than the national average.

Hawaii’s September 2013 average price for diesel decreased $0.047 per gallon or 0.9% from the same month last year, but increased $0.019 per gallon or 0.4% from the previous month.  In September 2013, the average prices per gallon for diesel among Hawaii’s market were as follows: Kauai, $4.942; Oahu, $4.766; Wailuku, $4.739; and Hilo, $4.799.

  •      Gasoline Consumption:

Hawaii’s statewide consumption for gasoline, as measured by the gasoline tax base, increased 1.1% in July 2013 from the same month a year ago.  A total of 38.5 million gallons of gasoline was consumed in July 2013.  Gasoline in July 2013 was mainly consumed in Honolulu (64.1%), followed by Hawaii County (16.4%), Maui County (14.0%), and Kauai County (5.5%).

Highway Diesel Fuel Consumption:

Hawaii’s July 2013 consumption for highway use diesel was about 4.5 million gallons, increased 19.2% from the same month last year.  Highway use diesel in July 2013 was mainly consumed in Honolulu (64.5%), followed by Hawaii County (19.6%), Maui County (10.7%), and Kauai County (5.2%).

  •      Aviation Fuel Consumption:

In July 2013, data from the Department of Taxation showed aviation fuel consumption statewide decreased about 1.115 million barrels or 5.0% from the same month a year ago.  The 21.3 million gallons of aviation fuel distributed in July 2013 were shipped to the various counties as follows:  City and County of Honolulu, 50.0%; Maui County, 31.3%; Hawaii County, 9.6%; and Kauai County, 9.1%.

  •      Number of Vehicles:

As of September 2013, there were 1,055,497 registered taxable gasoline passenger vehicles in the state, 4.2% increase from the same period last year and an increase of 6,162 or 0.6% from August 2013.

There were 16,069 registered passenger hybrid vehicles, accounting for 1.5% of the total 1,082,994 registered passenger vehicles in September 2013, and representing an increase of 321 vehicles or 2.0% from August 2013.  There were 22,894 registered taxable diesel freight vehicles, 2.3% increase from the same period last year.

In September 2013, the number of hybrid freight vehicles totaled 77 and the number of registered taxable electric passenger vehicles totaled 1,869.  The number of registered taxable electric passenger vehicles increased 906 vehicles or 94.1% from the same month last year and increased 86 vehicles or 4.8% from August 2013.
