Koloa, Kauai, HI, December 30, 2013 – Poipu Beach Villas (PBV), developer of the Koloa Landing at Poipu Beach Wyndham Grand Resort, announced today that they are pursuing a 300 Kilowatt Solar Electric system for their south shore resort property. Owners Representative, Todd Hadley stated, “Our Development Team, General Contractor and Resort Operator are in constant pursuit of practices that will lead to a lifestyle of responsible decision making and environmentally friendly living for our homeowners and guests. Installing one of the largest solar projects on the island is a testament to this commitment.”
CitiGreen Solar and Haleakala Solar are building and installing the system for Koloa Landing which is comprised of nearly 1,200 Canadian Solar modules affixed to the rooftops of the residential resort buildings. The entire system is connected to the grid using Enphase micro-inverters. Installation will begin in the next few months with an expected completion in 2014.
The million dollar solar project will produce nearly 456,000 kilowatt hours of electricity each year and will eliminate hundreds of thousands of dollars from the annual electric bill for the property. “Not only will Koloa Landing realize financial benefits, they will also enjoy knowing they are making an environmental difference. Each year, this system will offset 360 tons of carbon dioxide. This equates to turning off 3,904 – 40 watt incandescent light bulbs and planting 9,120 trees each year the system is producing electricity”, stated Kelly Christopher of CitiGreen Solar.
Kauai is seeing a dramatic increase in solar projects in the last couple of years, particularly on the south side of the island. The Koloa/Poipu area is already home to Kauai’s second largest solar facility, owned by Kauai Island Utility Cooperative (KIUC). The largest solar facility is located on the South/West side of the island at Port Allen and owned by Alexander & Baldwin Co. Additionally, there is a 300 kilowatt array in Omao. The constant sun in this area creates supreme conditions for solar power.
