REPORT FROM THE BOYS & GIRLS CLUB OF HAWAII – The 11th Annual Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation Ocean Sports and Fitness Day provides a unique opportunity for Boys & Girls Club of Hawaii (BGCH) youngsters to spend a day learning about beach and water sports and health and fitness. Thanks to a $5,000 grant from the Outrigger Duke Kahanamoku Foundation the event is free for BGCH youth. Club members from Ewa Beach, Honolulu, Kailua, Nanakuli and Waianae will travel to Kailua and Kalama Beaches to participate in 3 expert clinics.
- Surfing / Body Boarding / Stand Up Paddling – Hawaiian Island Creations and Volcom’s Men’s Surf Team
- Canoe Paddling and Ocean Safety – Fossil Canoes and Aloha Lifesaving
- Volleyball – Aloha Beach Volleyball
Instructional Clinics run from 9 am to 11:30 am. 125 additional adult volunteers come ready to supervise 250 energetic club members on the beach for the day. The companies providing adult volunteers include: Bank of Hawaii, University of Phoenix and Ross Stores. Volcom provided a significant donation to purchase rash guards for all the youth and volunteers.
After the clinics, Club members will do a ‘beach clean-up” to celebrate National Earth Day at both Kailua and Kalama Beaches. At noon a hearty lunch will be catered by Duke’s Waikiki Restaurant and Jamba Juice.
