BY SEN. SAM SLOM, R-HAWAII KAI-DIAMOND HEADDilly Dally, Dalai. The Dalai Lama visited Honolulu last week amidst much fanfare, endless TV coverage and adoration. One of the primary sponsors of the latest trip was Honolulu billionaire (EBay) Pierre Omidyar (also owner of Civil Beat) and his newly created Pillars of Peace Foundation. His Holiness Dalai Lama has been in exile for 50 years when chased from his native Tibet by the Chinese Communists. However, it seems he has become more of a jet-setting, high profile, celebrity than a man of religion. He is also known for his humor and could double as a stand up comic. In a performance at the UH Stan Sheriff dome last Sunday, the venue was sold out with nearly 10,000 attendees, including Governor Neil Abercrombie and other politicians. Attendees paid between $30 and $60 each ($10 for UH students) for the show which included Willie K and Henry Kapono. Where did the proceeds go? To several charitable and peace activities promoters say.

Do You Want to Know a Secret?  If you missed hearing Peter Kay (“Your Computer Minute”) at the SBH Special Networking Luncheon, April 11, at The Hawaii Kai Outback Steakhouse, you missed hearing some very enlightening and valuable business secrets of successful social media usage.

Let My People Go. After four months of a pilot study on the second floor of the Capitol, the separating glass doors were removed by DAGS over the weekend. No one liked the so-called “energy saving” glass which further separated the taxpayers from their elected Senators. The doors were also ADA non-friendly for the disabled. Now if we could could just fix the elevators and flush toilets in the Capitol before the Session ends May 3.

Pass The Tea. The 4th annual Tea Party was held at the State Capitol yesterday. A disappointing small crowd of only about 100 urged the public to think before they vote this November. Several speakers urged independenttaxpayer actions. In order to get a crowd at the Capitol, you must be: (1) a union, (2) a special interest group dependent on taxpayer subsidy, (3) bused in to the event, (4) provided lots of free food and (5) treated to professional entertainment. Liberty loving taxpayers don’t seem to qualify.

“Capitol Idol 2012.” More people jammed the Capitol Auditorium than the Tea Party yesterday to witness a scary House vs. Senate “talent” contest for the benefit of the Food Bank of Hawaii. Augie T was hilarious as MC. Five Senate and 5 House contestants squared off in the 1stannual contest. Overall winner was House Finance Chair, Rep. Marcus Oshiro, in drag. Truly frightening.  The House took the trophy. At least it was for a good cause.

Dunk ‘Em. And more for the Food Bank at the Big Square Building: if you want to help the needy ($5 donation) and dunk your favorite –or least favorite– Senator, tomorrow stating at 12:45 pm is your day. Come dunk ’em on the Capitol lawn.

Fed HIOSH Takeover?  According to Hawaii Reporter, the State HIOSH program is being taken over, at least in part, by the Federal Government because they were not performing. There were two reports issued by Federal OSHA, one in 2010 and one in 2011 which informed the State that they were “not satisfactory.”  The state responded poorly and the Feds are instituting concurrent jurisdiction; that means some industries or all of  them will fall under Federal OSHA enforcement.

Next Stop, Zippy’s. Last week the State Senate and Senator Brian Taniguchi recognized Zippy’s restaurants as the recipient of the 2011 national food service beef backer award. The national food service beef backer award recognizes and honors food establishments that actively serve and promote beef products in their establishments. This year, it was announced that the 2011 award in the chain operator category is Zippy’s restaurants.

Zippy’s began its humble beginnings when Francis and Charles Higaopened their first restaurant on King street next to Washington Middle School in 1966. They have always made a concerted effort to care for their patrons and support local businesses. Paul Yokota is the President of Zippy’s.

Today, Zippy’s restaurants is truly a landmark in Hawaii with twenty-five locations and purchases approximately twenty-one thousand pounds of beef locally each month! Where’s the beef? Go to Zippy’s.

Calling All Foodies. SBH member Amy Brinker, Governing Board Member of the Hawaii Food Policy Council, says, “Hi Foodie Friends!

If you have some extra change, a heart of gold, and good taste, check out the fundraiser for the Hawaii Food Policy Council below.   We like to call ourselves “The Unofficial Department of Food” because Department of Ag looks at land issues, while Department of Health looks at sanitation and health, while other agencies involved in social issues and nutrition…and the list just goes on.

We want to END the silo-effect by bringing together all stakeholders to talk about the WHOLE food system, from ground to garbage.  Food is more than what sits on a plate.  Help us out by making a contribution, whether you have $5 or $500 to contribute.

We would like to get to $5,000 in the LAST 5 DAYS of this effort.  We can do it with your help!  Donʻt worry, you’ll get something for you love.

CPS-Tile Mart Celebrates 40th.  Central Pacific Supply Corporation (also dba: Tile Mart) was started in 1971, to fulfill a need in the Islands for “locally stocked” ceramic tile and sewer pipe. CPS faced some daunting challenges for a new business, most notably the Great West Coast dock strike of 1971-early ’72, which almost brought the fledging company to an early end, but through long nights and 18+ hour days, Ralph A. Ferguson, Jr. and the rest of his crew managed to survive the strike, along with a couple of major floods over the years, to grow and prosper, to where they are now the oldest and largest independent tile distributor in the Islands.

Now focused on tile alone (including ceramic, porcelain, glass and metal tile for residential and commercial applications), and celebrating the completion of their 40th year in Hawaii, CPS-Tile Mart continues to bring in the finest American and foreign hard tile (they’re the exclusive sources in Hawaii for major tile brands like Crossville porcelain, under the watchful eyes of Ferguson’s two sons, Chip and Mike. Located in Mapunapuna,CPS-Tile Mart welcomes retail and wholesale customers to its showroom and warehouses Monday thru Saturday.

Stop Rail, No Go. 30 powerful big business leaders formed a group,Move Oahu Forward, in February, with the backing of Hawaii’s Senior Senator Daniel Inouye. They hope to convince the public the rail will improve Oahu. While they have money, power and connections on their side, rail critics have truth on theirs. They note the project has lost support because it has changed so drastically since the public voted to approve the controversial project by a narrow margin in 2008, and because of deception by those in charge.

As Honolulu City Council Budget Chair Ann Kobayashi points out, voters believed in 2008 that the rail would cost $3.7 billion and be several miles longer, extending to the Salt Lake and the University of Hawaii’s Manoa Campus. Now the rail has ballooned in cost by about $1.6 billion and will skip Salt Lake and stop at the Ala Moana Center, far short of the University.
