HONOLULU- Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui filed his nomination papers this afternoon, making his candidacy for lieutenant governor official. He was joined by his wife, Lyndelle, and daughters, Mikayla, Kaylee and Kenna at the Office of Elections in downtown Honolulu. Supporters also surrounded Tsutsui and his family.
“I am honored to have earned the support from the people of Hawaii and I can’t thank them enough for believing in our campaign,” said Tsutsui. “As lieutenant governor, I will continue to work hard for Hawaii’s working families and I look forward to an exciting election season.”
Tsutsui became the 12th Lieutenant Governor of the State of Hawaii after the position was vacated at the end of 2012. He is a member of the International Committee for the National Lieutenant Governor’s Association and treasurer of the Democratic Lieutenant Governors Association. Tsutsui was elected in 2002 to the Hawaii State Senate, representing Central Maui. From 2010 to 2012, he was selected by his peers to serve as President of the Senate, making him the youngest Senate President and first Senator from Maui to serve as Senate President.
As a freshman Senator, Tsutsui became Senate Majority Caucus Leader, a position he held until 2010. Tsutsui also served as the Vice Chair of the Committee on Ways and Means (2005-2010); Vice Chair of the Committee on Intergovernmental Affairs (2007-2010); Vice Chair of the Committee on Tourism (2003-2004); and was a member of the Committees on Health, Education, Military Affairs, Housing, Human Services, and Government Operations. He is a former small business owner and financial advisor. The Lt. Governor earned a B.A. in Economics from the University of Hawaii at Manoa and is a graduate of Maui High School.
Lt. Governor Shan Tsutsui has earned the endorsement of Hawaii’s prominent unions, including: Hawaii Construction Alliance; Hawaii Regional Council of Carpenters; Hawaii Masons Union, Local 1 and Local 630; Laborers’ International Union of North America, Local 368; Operating Engineers, Local 3; Hawaii Firefighters Association; International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), Local 142; Ironworkers Union, Local 625; Plumbers and Fitters, Local 675; Sheet Metal Union, Local 293; Hawaii Government Employees Association (HGEA); University of Hawaii Professional Assembly(UHPA); and Hawaii Optometric Association.
Retired U.S. Senator Daniel Akaka serves as honorary chair for Tsutsui’s campaign.

Hawaii constantly electing people of low integrity into powerful positions, this has to be one of the dumbest states (if not the dumbest) in the country. I knew Tsutsui in college and I knew him for several years after getting out of school, and Shan Tsutsui was probably the worst degenerate gambler in town. In fact, in college, he was working for organized crime (he was a "runner" for the gambling syndicate, and all I remember of him was he and his roommate, Giles Kawahara, taking in and making their own bets on the football games). It got so bad that Kawahara had to drop out of school because he had accumulated too much of a gambling debt. Tsutsui survived and kept working for the mob. I realize that people can change over the years but this is definitely not someone I would trust in such a powerful position because I have seen firsthand how little integrity Tsutsui has and I would imagine, although many years have passed, deep down he is still the same person I knew up in the Lokelani dorms at UH Manoa. But go ahead, Hawaii–again, ignore the character of the individual and elect that person based purely on union support and adherence to the liberal agenda. Ignore it and you'll get what you deserve.
