Washington, DC – Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard (HI-2) today honored WWII veteran Staff Sergeant Dick Shigemi Hamada in a speech to the House of Representatives. SSG Hamada, a Japanese-American born in Hawai‘i, passed away on May 27 at the age of 92. He will be interred at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific at Punchbowl today.

“Staff Sergeant Hamada volunteered for the renowned 442nd Regimental Combat Team in 1943, shipped off to the fearsome battlefields of the Burma-India-China theatre, and later parachuted into what is now Beijing in order to rescue more than 600 prisoners of war,” said Congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard in the House of Representatives. “Throughout his military career, Staff Sergeant Hamada stayed true to the Aloha spirit. His love of our country, and determination to do whatever it took to accomplish the mission, are an inspiration to all who have raised their hands to wear the uniform and serve.”

  1. you know, all the ni-sei's like SSgt Hamada were faced with two difficult choices back then: they could either join the military and prove to the FDR regime their loyalty to the u.s.government(they all loved their country, but the leaders didn't care about that)or they would languish in those relocation camps along with their parents, brothers and sisters, aunts and uncles.grandparents and ni-sei friends and neighbors and be branded axis sympathisers and accused of loyalty to the Japanese emperor without any due process.they all served ,many died.they did this with love and respect for our country, communities, neighbors, friends and loved ones inspite of our federal and state governments violation of our US Constitution and the rights of not only the ni-sei's but FDR"s vilation of all Americans' rights.
