KAUAI – The Kauai Fire Department estimates that the fire that burned the historic Coco Palms resort over a period of two days beginning mid day July 4, resulted in roughly $600,000 in damages.

The cause of the fire of the property remains under investigation as fire investigators gathering information and working alongside an excavator.

Heavy equipment was used to tear down the remaining building that was badly burned in the fire and move the rubble around to allow the firefighters to soak the exposed areas with foam.

According to a preliminary report, the main lobby and adjoining offices of the resort were completely destroyed and the breezeway of a connecting building was badly burned.

The property has been abandoned since it was destroyed during Hurricane Iniki in 1992.

During its hey day, numerous movie stars visited the resort. It was also the location where Elvis Presley‘s film Blue Hawaii was filmed.
