Amelia Mary Earhart, an American aviation pioneer and best selling author, disappeared July 2, 1937, over the central Pacific Ocean near Howland Island during an attempt to make a flight of the globe.
Earhart had already become the first female aviator to fly solo across the Atlantic Ocean, for which she received the U.S. Distinguished Flying Cross.
On Thursday, July 10, another woman named Amelia Earhart – actually Amelia Rose Earhart – will stop in Hawaii on her way to complete the 1937 around-the-world flight of her namesake, Amelia Mary Earhart.
Hawaii is her second to last stop on a journey that will take 100 hours over 17 days, including 14 planned stops.
She will land at Dillingham Air Field on the North Shore of Oahu, and depart Friday to Oakland, CA.
Upon landing in California, Amelia Rose will set the record as the youngest women ever to circumnavigate the globe in a single engine airplane.
Unlike Amelia Mary Earhart, Amelia Rose is able to chat about her flight via social media on her Facebook and Twitter pages.
The former news anchor turned philanthropist is the founder and CEO of the Fly With Amelia Foundation, a 501c3 that provides flight scholarships to young women, aviation career mentoring, and STEM education programs.
She lives in Denver, Colorado.
Amelia Rose Earhart is her given birth name and she has no relation to the original Amelia Mary Earhart.
