Refreshments will be served at Brue Bar.

“The Historic Downtown tour and open house provides an opportunity to discover masterpieces of Hawaii’s architectural history,” said Kiersten Faulkner, executive director of Historic Hawai‘i Foundation.  “It provides a way for residents and visitors to learn more about places that are integral to the history of Hawai‘i and the ways these exquisite buildings reflect the people and events that shaped our communities.”

The event is part of an occasional series of open houses offered by Historic Hawai‘i Foundation to showcase the architecture, landscapes and cultural sites that comprise the historic fabric of the Islands.  Proceeds from the event benefit the programs and services of Historic Hawai‘i Foundation.

The Dillingham Transportation Building was built in 1929 for Walter F. Dillingham, founder of the Hawaiian Dredging Company, and is historically significant for its associations with the commercial development of Honolulu and the Dillingham family empire of businesses. It is also architecturally significant as an example of the Italian Renaissance Revival Style.

Also dating to 1929, the Alexander and Baldwin headquarters is a four-story building constructed of steel with concrete casings. It is significant both for its associations with the Alexander and Baldwin Corporation, which has played an important role in the economic development of Hawaii, and as an example of architecture that combines Oriental and Western designs adapted to the Hawaiian climate. It was designed by C.W. Dickey and Hart Wood.

The six-story Stangenwald Building was Honolulu’s first high-rise office building and was designed by C.W. Dickey in 1901.  It, too, is a significant example of Italianate architecture.

Tickets for the tour are $25 for HHF Members and $50 for General Admission.  Tickets are required and may be purchased online at https://hhf2014downtownpauhanatour.eventbrite.com.  Free parking is available for event attendees and will be provided upon ticket purchase.  Questions about the event may be directed to Historic Hawai‘i Foundation at 523-2900 or outreach@historichawaii.org.
