As we celebrate the life and work of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., I encourage the people of Hawaii to honor his memory by participating in community service projects regularly, but especially on January 18th. In keeping with the Martin Luther King Jr. Day of Service credo, “a day on, not a day off,” a number of organizations around the state will spend the holiday improving our island community. I know they could use your help.
In my District for example, volunteers are invited to join the Hawaii Youth Conservation Corps’ efforts to revitalize reserves on the four major islands. Work will begin Monday morning at the Olowalu Cultural Reserve on Maui, and the National Tropical Botanical Garden in Lawai on Kauai, the Na Pohaku O Hauwahine in Kailua on Oahu, as well as the Amy Greenwell Ethnobotanical Garden on the island of Hawaii. These reserves could use your help in clearing, weeding, and planting native plants to return the land to its natural, pristine state. People on Hawaii Island can also contribute on Martin Luther King Jr. Day by making food donations to benefit the Hawaii Food Basket at virtually every grocery store, island wide. There’s a greater need now at all our food banks as our families struggle to make ends meet.
I encourage you to organize your own community clean-up or volunteer project to make a difference in your neighborhood.
