HONOLULU – There have already been more than one thousand 800 same sex marriages in Hawaii since the practice was legalized in December 2013.

Nerdwallet reports there has been a positive impact on Hawaii’s economy because of those marriages, with Hawaii bringing in $26,615,971 more.

The report said 5.1 percent of Hawaii’s population is LGBT and assumed 1 percent – or 732 – will marry, spending about $36,802 per ceremony.

An earlier report by University of Hawaii economist Sumner LaCroix looked at the impact from visitors coming to Hawaii to get married. She said Hawaii’s same-sex marriage destination status will likely bring in another $217 million to Hawaii over the next two years from out of state.
