PEARL HARBOR – Two men was killed and two others injured Wednesday at a worksite in Pearl Harbor when a 5-ton buoy fell 7 stories onto a platform where they stood, according to Hawaii News Now.

MCC (SW) John M. Hageman, media operations officer for the U.S. Navy Region Hawaii, says the men were employed by a private contractor to work on the out of service military vessel.

Hageman released a statement to the media Wednesday: “We are working closely with local officials to respond to a tragic accident that occurred today in Middle Loch, Pearl Harbor during the replacement of a buoy by independent civilian contractors.”

“Our thoughts and prayers are with all the individuals affected.  Honolulu Fire Department and City, Federal Fire Department and County & County of Honolulu EMS responded and provided emergency medical assistance.

“A full investigation into the incident is underway, and we will work closely with local officials and agencies. Again, our thoughts are with the contractors, friends and families involved.”
