Ex-newsman Gregg Takayama announces State House candidacy

Former award-winning journalist Gregg Takayama today filed as a Democratic candidate for the State House representing Pearl City’s new 34th District (Momilani-Pacific Palisades).

Takayama has served as spokesman for UH Manoa for the past six years as Director of Community and Government Affairs.  He will be taking leave without pay from the University, effectively immediately.

“I hope to use my experience and knowledge gained from covering and working in government to be an effective advocate for Pearl City in the Legislature,” he said.

Takayama was a news reporter for KHON2 for eight years (1997-2005) and at the Honolulu Star-Bulletin (1974-78).  He served as press secretary for U.S. Senator Daniel K. Inouye (1978-90), spokesman for the State Department of Public Safety (1995-97), and communications director for Lt. Governor Ben Cayetano (1992-95).

He is a graduate of UH Manoa and recipient of 1st Prize for Spot News Reporting (2001) from the Society for Professional Journalists – Hawaii Chapter and 1stPrize for News Videography (1998), SPJ-Hawaii Chapter.
