Hawaii’s Bioeconomy Accelerates as Innovators are Showcased at 2012 Bio International Convention

Some of Hawai’i’s most innovative bioscience technologies will be featured in the Hawai’i Pavilion at the 2012 BIO International Convention, the global event for biotechnology, taking place June 18-21, 2012 at the Boston Convention and Exhibition Center in Boston, MA.  A delegation of 18 organizations will represent Hawai’i’s biotech community at the industry’s largest conference featuring more than 15,000 attendees.
“With our critical mass of biotech industry clusters spanning agricultural, environmental, industrial, medical, research, economic and business development services, Hawai’i is poised to excel in the global marketplace,” said Mark McGuffie, Managing Director of Enterprise Honolulu.  “The Hawai’i Pavilion at the BIO International Conference is an opportunity to strategically position Hawai’i within the world bioscience industry as a leader in research, development and launch of breakthrough technologies.”
Some of the Hawai‘i grown biotech companies showcased at The Hawai‘i Pavilion include:
  • Ala Wai Pharma: permeability enhancers to improve oral bio-availability of polar drugs with initial application to neuraminidase inhibitors for treatment of influenza (Relenza & Peramivir);
  • Cardax Pharmaceuticals, Inc:  a new class of non-toxic anti-inflammatory compounds that can be used to safely and more economically treat major chronic diseases driven by inflammation, including osteoarthritis, diabetes, macular degeneration, and cardiovascular disease;
  • Hawaii Biotech:  developing vaccines for tropical and other emerging diseases;
  • PanThera Biopharma:  drug discovery and development company with product development programs in Anthrax and Botulism treatment and Ebola prevention;
  • Protekai:  novel near-infrared / infrared molecular probes and fluorescent proteins for in-vivo diagnostics;
  • Tissue Genesis:  clinical stage company in the high-growth field of regenerative medicine to treat many severe and previously untreatable conditions such as heart disease, vascular disease, orthopedic and spine injury, and soft tissue and reconstructive repair;
  • Tru Tag Technologies, Inc: edible bar codes for on-dose authentication of pharmaceuticals, electronics, food and beverage using edible GRAS silica microtags that can be encoded with unique, serialized spectral codes allowing for batch-level identification of items for anti-counterfeiting, product tracking, quality control authentication and more.

Biotechnology in Hawaiʻi
More than 100 Hawaiʻi biotechnology-related organization are conducting research
and developing products in the state. This burgeoning biotech community dovetails with state’s overall economic development strategy to pursue technology companies, diversify the economy, raise the average income of Hawai’i residents, retain a knowledge-based workforce, and produce minimal impact on the overall environment.

  1. I had attended a convention like this one before and had a learn a lot because most of the participants are well known in this field or industry. If ever I'll have another chance to attend one I'll definitely grab that opportunity.
