PEARL HARBOR, Hawaii – Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard and Intermediate
Maintenance Facility completed USS Bremerton’s (SSN 698) Dry-docking
Selected Restricted Availability (DSRA) March 9.
After successfully undocking the submarine on schedule in January,
Shipyard workers maintained the momentum to complete the rest of the
DSRA work pierside, pass sea trials and return Bremerton to the Fleet.
“To all involved in Bremerton’s DSRA, [you did] outstanding work for
this tremendous effort,” said Rear Adm. Douglas McAneny, commander of
U.S. Pacific Fleet Submarine Force. “The Bremerton [crew] and the DSRA
Project Team completed Bremerton’s DSRA on schedule, directly
contributing to Fleet readiness. This accomplishment is significant,
and the efforts of each individual involved are truly appreciated.”
The Bremerton project team faced several challenges, including a tsunami
that came ashore Feb. 27. While the tsunami was not destructive,
preparations for it put the project behind schedule an entire day. The
DSRA was also delayed one day while port operations responded to an
emergent situation on another vessel, according to Bremerton Project
Superintendent Miles Kotoshirodo.
Bremerton entered dry dock Nov. 7, 2009. Because of these challenges,
the original completion date was adjusted from March 7 to March 9.
“I want to thank project leadership and the entire shipyard for an
absolutely fantastic performance on Bremerton,” said Shipyard Commander
Capt. Greg Thomas. “It was truly an integrated team effort by civilians
and Sailors working together to finish this DSRA on time.”
A field activity of Naval Sea Systems Command, Pearl Harbor Naval
Shipyard is a full-service naval shipyard and regional maintenance
center for the Navy’s surface ships and submarines. Strategically
located in the mid-Pacific, the shipyard is about a week’s “steam time”
closer to potential major regional contingencies in East Asia than sites
on the West Coast. Pearl Harbor Naval Shipyard is the largest
industrial employer in the state of Hawaii, with a combined civilian and
military workforce of more than 4,700 and an annual operating budget of
about $687 million.
