Pima County Sheriff Clarence Dupnik

BY JEFF CHURCHILL – Dear Honorable Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona,

The purpose of this correspondence is to register an official complaint of misconduct against Sheriff Clarence Dupnik of Pima County, for conduct unbecoming a law enforcement officer. I demand that my complaint be investigated as per the law and appropriate disciplinary action be taken.

His remarks at during his first press conference following the tragic massacre shooting in Tucson on January, 8, 2011 and subsequent press conferences to date, stating that the members of the TEA Party and the conservative party in general, were responsible for the senseless massacre were stated as fact, irresponsible and dangerous. While condemning specific members of the public for their “political vitriol” he engaged in the same propaganda and hate mongering, fanning the flames of hate, and targeting specified persons for retaliation, for political gain himself. It has been a truly unprofessional and despicable spectacle.

As the head of a police agency, at a nationally televised news conference, his statements are taken as fact. He admitted in an interview with Megan Kelly on FOX news (1-9-11) that these statements and conclusions of blame, were merely his own opinion, not based on fact and were promoting his own “Democratic, left leaning agenda.” Unfortunately, he has not received the same scrutiny and challenge during the plethora of other news interviews on other channels, and continues to fan the flames of hate, every chance he gets.

In 50+ years of watching press conferences given by heads of law enforcement agencies, I have never seen this kind of unprofessional and dangerous conduct. God help the state of Arizona if the Sheriff’s continued hate mongering actually results in personal injury and/or property damage.

As a retired law enforcement officer, I am sickened and embarrassed by the Sheriff’s behavior. He is giving the entire law enforcement community, as well as the state of Arizona, a national black eye.
