Do you enjoy visiting Hanauma Bay or care about the health of the reefs around the islands? If so, you can make a difference by volunteering with the UH Sea Grant Hanauma Bay Education Program!
On Saturday mornings beginning in the middle of October and running through the middle of November, the Hanauma Bay Education Program will be holding training sessions for new interpretive guide volunteers. The sessions will be held at the City & County of Honolulu’s Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve and will cover the history of Hanauma Bay and the education program, the bay’s geology and reef ecology, and Hawaiian culture. In addition, the prospective volunteers will also have the opportunity to explore the Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve through fun activities such as a geology hike, reef scavenger hunt and an optional guided snorkel!
New volunteers will join a team of dedicated individuals who promote stewardship of Hanauma Bay and minimize the impacts to the reef by educating visitors about proper reef etiquette and the value of marine resources. If you enjoy talking story with visitors, learning about the bay, or just hanging out at the beach, we invite you to join our team!
No experience is necessary. A commitment of six months, just four hours per week is required. The shifts run from 8:00 am – noon and noon – 4:00 pm every day except Tuesday when the park is closed.
