REPORT FROM THE UNIVERSITY OF HAWAII – UH Manoa Chancellor Tom Apple has announced the appointment of Ben Jay as the new Athletics Director. President M.R.C. Greenwood joins him in congratulating Mr. Jay. She did meet with Mr. Jay during his visit and is very pleased with his selection.

President Greenwood is the approving authority for Mr. Jay’s appointment.  Hawai‘i state law requires the university to give public notice of proposed salaries for executive and managerial appointments in an open meeting.  The next scheduled Board of Regents meeting is January 24, 2013. Presidential action will follow the public posting.

Mr. Jay has accepted an offer of $293,000 annual salary with performance-based bonuses.  For context, the 2011-2012 Division 1A Athletics Directors’ Association’s Annual Compensation Survey shows the average salary for Athletic Directors nationwide is $354,442.

The average AD salary in the Big 10 conference (Mr. Jay’s current conference) is $521,000 and in the Mountain West, $264,000.

Mr. Jay is being invited to return to Hawai‘i next week.  He will have a number of meetings with Athletics Department staff and university executives to discuss various transition issues, including a start date as the Director of Athletics at UHM.
