REPORT FROM MAUI COUNTY – A Maui police officer shot a male suspect in Kihei after he allegedly pulled a handgun on the officer this morning.
Police said they received a report of a stolen vehicle parked at the Mana Kai Hotel. When officers arrived on scene at 11:20 a.m. they found a suspect in the vehicle.
Police said the suspect attempted to flee the scene and while doing so allegedly pulled out a handgun and pointed it at one of the officers. The officer responded by firing his weapon at the suspect who sustained fatal injuries.
A police investigation at the scene is still ongoing at this time.
The police officer involved in the shooting is an 18-year veteran of the Maui Police Department, assigned to Kihei Patrol. He is on administrative leave pending an investigation as part of standard procedure by MPD.
