FEMA approves over $1.3M in funding for storm-related Kauai projects

LĪHU‘E – To date, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has approved more than $1.3 million in federal funds for storm-related Kaua’i projects through the Public Assistance Program.

The funding will pay for 75 percent of the cost to repair or replace public property damaged by the heavy rains in March, while the county will cover the balance.
In addition, some of the labor costs associated with the county’s emergency response as well as equipment replacement will be reimbursed by FEMA.

The Department of Public Works will receive the bulk of the federal funds, $1.17 million, primarily for road and culvert repair work:

• ‘Anini Beach Road – roadway and culvert repairs
• Hale‘ilio Road in Wailua Houselots – culvert repairs
• Halēko Road, Līhu’e – roadway shoulder repairs
• Haua‘ala Road, Kapa‘a – embankment and roadway repairs
• Ka‘ehulua and Apopo roads, Kapa‘a – roadway and culvert repairs
• Kahuna Road, Kapahi – roadway and shoulder repairs
• Ki‘owai Place, Kapa‘a – remove/replace damaged swale
• Ohiki Road, Kīlauea – roadway and shoulder repairs, guardrail replacement, and debris removal
• Pua Nani Street, Līhu’e – repair/replace damaged culvert
• Wēhē Road, Līhu’e – repair/replace damaged air compressors
• Ka‘iakea fire station – repair/replace damaged photovoltaic panels
• Kalāheo fire station – roof repairs
• Līhu’e Civic Center – roof repairs and equipment repairs/replacement

Other county departments that have been approved for reimbursement include: Kaua’i Civil Defense Agency – $10,129; Department of Finance – $2,195; Kaua’i Fire Department – $12,850; Kaua’i Police Department – $91,175; and Department of Water – $18,324

A number of storm-related Kaua’i projects are still being considered for federal funds.

Last April, President Barack Obama signed a disaster declaration for Hawai’i, making it possible for the state to receive the cost-shared FEMA assistance.
