CHICAGO – Gasoline is about $4.07 on Oahu this week.

But in 18 states across the country, reporters are asking ‘How low could they go?’  as Americans watch in envy of folks in Tulsa, OK, Lubbock, TX and St. Louis, MO where gas prices are poised to break below $3 as the average price for their respective markets.

Already, St. Louis consumers are seeing some stations at $2.79; while Tulsa has some stations at $2.85 per gal.  In Lubbock today consumers can pay as low as $2.89 or as high as $3.59 per gal.

“While the direction of current prices reflect what we can expect for Q4 fuel prices, it’s certainly encouraging to see how many states already have stations with regular gas available for under $3,” said Patrick DeHaan, senior petroleum analyst, GasBuddy.
‘Our network of websites shows 18 states where motorists could access gasoline below $3 per gallon today:  MO, SC, TX, MS, OK, AR, VA, NM, LA, TN, AL, NJ, KS, GA, NE, IA, OH, and IN,” DeHaan noted.

“If current supply and demand fundamentals remain unchanged and West Texas crude slips into the mid-$90s, then perhaps by Thanksgiving we could see as many as 33 states (two-thirds of the U.S.) with gas stations selling below $3,” says Gregg Laskoski, another  GasBuddy senior petroleum analyst.

GasBuddy operates over 250 websites that track gasoline prices at over 140,000 gasoline stations in the United States and Canada. In addition, GasBuddy offers a free app (named one of the ’50 best 2013 iPhone apps by Time magazine) which has been downloaded over 25 million times to help motorists find the lowest gasoline prices in their area.
