REPORT FROM KAUAI COUNTY – LĪHU’E – On Thursday, a Kaua’i Grand Jury returned an indictment against former Alaska resident Steven M. Wilson, age 26, for Murder in the Second Degree in the April 2013 death of Kendra Lewis, age 21, also formerly of Alaska.

Kendra’s body was found in her Kapa‘a residence on April 26. The grand jury also found that Steven M. Wilson is subject to enhanced sentencing where the murder was “especially heinous, atrocious, or cruel, manifesting exceptional depravity”. The finding by the grand jury enables the State to seek a sentence of Life without the possibility of parole.

The case is being prosecuted by Deputy Prosecuting Attorney Melinda K. Mendes, and bail on the grand jury warrant is set at $1 million. Wilson is currently in custody and was awaiting a preliminary hearing on the case. The lead detective in the investigation is Kauai Police Department Sgt. Bernard Purisima.

An indictment is simply a method by which a person is charged with criminal activity and raises no inference of guilt. An individual is presumed innocent until competent evidence is presented to a jury that establishes guilt beyond a reasonable doubt.
