Hawaii is Number 1, But It’s Not Good News

According to figures from the U.S. Census Bureau (see https://www.census.gov/govs/statetax/02staxrank.html) the state of Hawaii was number 1, highest in the nation, in per-capita state taxes collected for 2002.

State tax collections per capita were $2,747 in Hawaii, about 48 percent above the national average of $1,853. For comparison, California collected $2,214 per capita, New York collected $2,258 per capita, Florida collected $1,484 per capita, and Texas collected $1,316 per capita.
