By Gov. Linda Lingle – With the passing of Charlie Wedemeyer, Hawai‘i has lost one of its most inspirational and beloved sons. As a star athlete and a coach, Charlie was a legend, embodying sportsmanship, teamwork and dedication.
Off the field, Charlie was a champion of life. He taught us how to win and persevere, no matter how difficult the circumstances.
Having been stricken with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis or Lou Gehrig’s disease, Charlie instilled in us important lessons of fighting through adversity, appreciating life and having faith. Though he could no longer speak, Charlie was one of the most effective and impassioned spokespersons for keeping a positive attitude – and he always did it with grace and a sense of humor.
Together with his wife Lucy always by his side, Charlie overcame tremendous challenges, yet managed to keep his spirit strong and helped others find hope and courage.
I wish to extend my deepest sympathy to the Wedemeyer family. Our lives have been enriched by Charlie Wedemeyer, and he will truly be missed.
