NEW YORK (MarketWatch) — Hawaiian Holdings Inc. is taking on some big names to score two coveted gates at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport.
The Honolulu-based carrier is keen to develop its Asia destinations to spark growth, and tapping the Japanese market would be a significant victory. Hawaii /quotes/comstock/15*!ha/quotes/nls/ha (HA 7.72, -0.12, -1.53%) is Japan’s biggest U.S. destination, topping Guam and California by a wide margin, according to a 2008 Commerce Department report.
While the deal would bring more tourists to the island state, it also would bridge travel between Japan and the U.S. mainland, Chief Executive Mark Dunkerley said in an interview.
