“It’s an honor to be selected as a member of the team.” Gelato Master Dirk Koeppenkastrop, Ph.D. beamed after hearing he had been chosen as one of five team members from across the US who will travel to Italy in January 2014 to represent the USA in the World Gelato Championships, “Coppa del Mondo della Gelateria”.

The World Gelato Championships – a highly prestigious event in the culinary industry – are held every two years as part of the International Exhibition of Artisan Gelato, Confectionery and Bakery in Rimini, Italy.

This year, the US gelato team is comprised of five artisan chefs who have been hand-picked for their skills in gelato-making, ice sculpturing, and presentation.  Since 2007, the US team has participated at five World Gelato Championships to compete against dozens of international teams. 2014 will be the first year that Hawaii resident and University of Hawaii graduate Koeppenkastrop will participate.

In previous years, the US team won several awards, including the “Best Taste Award, “People’s Choice Award,” the “Best Presentation Gelato Tub Award,” and the “Best Gelato Cake Award.”

“The US team is determined to win top honors in 2014,” says Dirk Koeppenkastrop, founder and co-owner of IL Gelato Hawai’i. “The US team will present Hawai’i and Hawaiian flavors at the competition. We expect that we will mesmerize the judges with Hawaii’s unique flavors, decorations and the spirit of Aloha.”

IL Gelato Hawai’i served its Haupia Coconut Gelato at the final APEC conference hosted by President Barrack Obama and its Mango Sorbetto to the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet during his last visit in Honolulu.
