Shown below is a quick look at this week’s unemployment data – initial claims filed as compared to the same week last year.
Hawaii’s unemployment rate was 6 percent in June, unchanged from May according to the state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations. Out of a total workforce of 633,650 in June 38,150 were unemployed and 595,450 were employed, according to the DLIR report.
July figures are expected to be released tomorrow.

Statewide initial unemployment claims decreased by 24.3%,
with this week’s total filings of 1,866 and filings during the
same week in 2010 of 2,466.
Comparing 2011 to 2010 for the counties:
· Oahu had 311 fewer claims filed
· Hawaii had 51 fewer claims filed
· Maui had 103 fewer claims filed
· Kauai had 125 fewer claims filed
In percentage changes, comparing the current week to
the same week a year ago:
· Oahu had a 22.5% decrease
· Hawaii had a 11.9% decrease
· Maui had a 29.7% decrease
· Kauai had a 54.1% decrease
