Join the rest of Hawaii as we celebrate our most cherished grain at the 4th Annual Rice Festival on Sunday, September 1, 2013 from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. at Ward Centers. Admission is FREE, so get your chopsticks out and bring your appetite for a one-day taste trip to kick off National Rice Month.

Living in Hawaii, rice has always warmed the hearts and hungry bellies of us all; it is the foundation for some of the most classical local food which we enjoy, especially Spam Musubi. At this year’s Rice Fest participate in Da SPAM Musubi Eating Contest, or watch the experts attempt to re-break the Guinness World Record by building the WORLD’S LARGEST SPAM MUSUBI. Bound to impress, there will even be a Spam Musubi that will be over 700 pounds. For the past two years Hawaii has maintained the World Record for Largest Spam Musubi, in 2011 weighing 286 lbs. and in 2012 weighing 628 lbs.

“We are excited to bring back Rice Fest and look forward to an attempt at re-breaking the world record for building the largest Spam Musubi,” said Edward Sugimoto, founder and organizer of Rice Fest.

It will be an action-packed day full of activities that will also include professional chef demonstrations and a live performance from Kapena to celebrate a food that is a cultural cornerstone to so many in Hawaii. Don’t forget to stop by one of the 30 rice vendors to try some tasty rice treats as well.

Rice Fest will graciously accept your generous monetary or brown rice donations for Lanakila Pacific’s “Meals on Wheels” nonprofit volunteer-run program, Hawaii’s only island-wide meal service for seniors in need.

Rice Fest is organized by HPELive and proudly sponsored by the Hawaii Tourism Authority, VH07V, Oceanic Time Warner Cable, Lanakila Meals on Wheels, Channel808.tv, Ward Centers and The City & County of Honolulu.
