Ocean Safety officials are alerting the public about hazardous surf conditions expected through the weekend on the north and west facing shores.

“As a matter of public safety, we are asking beachgoers to stay out of the water on the north and west shores and instead visit other lifeguarded beaches such as Po’ipū, Lydgate, or Salt Pond,” said Kalani Vierra, head of the Ocean Safety Bureau. “Be safe by being smart.”

According to the National Weather Service, a large northwest swell will build throughout the weekend, creating large breaking waves in the surf zone and life-threatening rip currents.

Beachgoers are urged to stay completely out of the water in these areas and well away from the shore break.

Coastal residents should make preparations to protect life and property from large waves and possible flooding.

When in doubt, don’t go out!
